Have had a conversation with the owner but honestly forgot what he said it was. (The conversation was years ago obviously a Vw just no clue what year/configuration). The guy who owns it daily’s a mid 70's mercedes coup and keeps a early 70's jag in the garage. Sadly I doubt he’ll ever do anything with it sure he has intentions but he seems content with letting things kind of fall to pieces. A tarp has been his garages roof for over 10 years and his house is in similar disrepair.

That’s a first generation (1950-1967) Type 2 Transporter, but it’s probably a 55-62 ( because of the taillights and engine lid)
Here’s a 1957 for reference.
